Question: Why does my lincoln navigator's satellite navigation system need a cd to operate?

I just bought a used, 2003 Lincoln Navigator which has the factory equipped satellite nav. system. Somehow the dealership said they lost the CD- ROM that goes with the satellite navigation system, but they gave me an IOU for one when they find it. So for now, when I try to start the nav. system, it displays a message saying "please insert the navigation CD. " Tom Toms and Garmins don't need CDs, why does mine? And if the dealership flakes out on me, where can I find one of these on the open market?

Portable systems update using a computer. to update the maps on the gps you have a new disk needs to be bought. find the name of the company to contact about the gps system from your owners manual. the disk costs about $100. many people update their gps every 3 yrs because roads get built.

It is probably a dvd but it could be a cd. This is for the maps because usually cars don't have the maps built in to the nav. Maybe you could get it off ebay but it will probably be specially designed for your car so make sure it is the right one.
