Peter has a great answer. How are you going to solve the sewer problem? Don't put an outhouse, or septic tank/ field, next to any fresh water sources.

A well for water. And that would depend on the available aquifer for potable water. If you are near a shallow aquifer with adequate flow (less than ~25 feet (8 meters)) deep, you could drive a well-point and use a shallow-well pump. For which you would need power, of course. There are manual pumps and wind-driven pumps for the same purpose, but they can be costly for very good ones. If you do not have a shallow aquifer, you will have to drill a deep well, which increases costs exponentially. There are also manual and wind pumps for that purpose. You might be able to surface-pipe from a nearby spring and use a cistern for storage, but winter water and/ or water safety become issues at that point. Similarly with collecting rain water. If you are not near mains-power, you have several options, more-or-less in rank order of cost-to-install and effectiveness: a) Fuel-driven generator: Depending on your needs, these may range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand, after which you have the cost of fuel to operate them. Expect to pay much more for units rated for continuous use and with good sound insulation. Fuel consumption depends on use and the size of the unit, but will be at least several gallons per day. b) Wind Turbine: "Residential " turbines are available for costs ranging from ~$15,000 on up depending on capacity. For which you need good wind on a continuing basis. The smallest turbines make approximately 6-10KW which will give you a few lights and a small refrigerator and a small pump - when the wind is blowing. Battery storage will add to the cost but allow you brief periods of windlessness. c) Photovoltaic (PV): Cost is about $10/ watt installed these days. If this is to be your primary residence, you may qualify for Federal and state subsidies depending on the location and installation. You will need battery storage (not subsidized, and at an additional cost) if this is your only system and you want power at night. You will need clear southern exposure for this as well. As to what you put in your cabin - that is limited only by your imagination, skills and resources.

In the UK? Sorry but you need planning permission for the structure and other permissions, depending upon the area and the Local Environmental and Authorities for the disposal of waste water

First you need permission or they will tear it down! channel4.com/ 4homes/ on-tv/ grand-designs/ episode-guides/ sussex-the-woodman-s-cottage-08-06-11_p_1.html The guy built that by hand but he is not allowed to sell it. He is a copse-man by trade and if he left he would have to pull it all down.
