I am a fan of Cesar Millan. You can visit his website below or purchase his books. |

The best thing to do is to ask a vet, or maybe you could go to Petsmart, they have trainers there. |

Be Positive -- It is necessary to use positive reinforcement when you train your dog or puppy by offering some dog treats and a lot of praise if he performs something correctly. During the initial training sessions you can offer both verbal praise as well as treats. Remember, this is fun! Firm and Friendly -- When you give commands such as heel and come, you want to use a happy, friendly voice. On the other hand, you will want a lower, firmer voice for sit, down, and stay. Start Young…but not too early - The ideal time to start training begins at six to eight weeks, maybe even earlier depending on the puppy. But remember, it’s never too late to teach a dog a new trick. Don’t Rub His Nose in It - Though it may be tempting to rub your dog’s nose in his accident or swat him with a rolled up newspaper. Punishing your dog is not really a desired form of dog training. The only thing this will do in the end is teach your dog a serious problem--to become afraid of you. Do you think your dog should come over as you call if he thinks you are simply going to whack him or stick his nose into the carpet? Be Patient - Patience is key when you work with your dog or puppy. If you feel like you’re at the end of your leash before you’ve even started, don’t attempt to train your dog. Your dog is incredibly smart and will pick up on your emotions. Remember, this is fun! Keep it Short - Fifteen minutes or so is about the right time for learning simple commands, so focus on a single command a session and end it on a positive note. If your dog or pup has successfully done the command several times in a row remember to lavish him with praise. After the dog training session, spend some time playing. He will associate time with you as positive and anticipate his training. No Distractions - Try to pick a quiet spot free of distractions when training your dog to do tricks or commands. A secluded back yard or an inside room works best. If there are other pets in the family, put them up so they won’t interfere with training. And Remember, This is Fun! - Dog training, of course, ought to be a pleasant time for you and Fido. The time can be used to bond closely with your dog and learn each other’s personalities. When you do this, you will not only have a well-trained dog or puppy, but a longtime, loyal companion and friend. |

Http:/ / siriuspup.com/ beforebook.html in addition to the training you do at home you really should get into a class with other puppies so that s/ he can learn social skills with other puppies/ dogs and people. akc.org/ events/ obedience/ training_clubs/ |

Places for training tips (depending on level of training) from best to worst: Trainer/ Behaviorist Training center/ group training Published book/ Veterinarian (they tie in usefulness) Internet chat site Internet web site Books are based on a single person's opinion for the most part, vets are not trained in behavior or techniques, and ANYONE can put up a website nowadays. Heck i could say to you "i'm a trainer with 40 years of experience, and the best way to train a dog is to beat it every time it does something bad! " But i won't, because i'm not and it's wrong to beat a dog. But get my point? A lot of dog owners also have different training methods and SOME would be put down by an actual trainer for various reasons. The bast place for any advice is an actual trainer. Petsmart trainers are Okay depending on the store (some stores hire anyone, even people with no experience, and have them watch a video.. then BOOM they're a trainer.) But going to a training center is best. |

Join a local puppy class, it is a great opportunity for your dog to interact with other dogs and people and keep his attention on you in a distracting environment. Remember, when you got the dog, you made a commitment to fulfill all his needs as best you can. |

Enroll in a dog obedience class. Many towns have community education that offers dog training. It is a good way to learn from the trainer and other members of the class. It is also a good way to begin to socialize your dog in a nicely controlled environment. |

Http:/ / uwsp.edu/ psych/ dog/ lib-SpecTrain.htm#crate inch.com/ ~dogs/ cratetraining.html dogchannel.com/ akc.org/ leerburg.com/ puppygroundwork.htm just don't buy the dude's book. Me, personally, I'm getting a puppy in about a week, and I've been buying puppy books and books for pomeranians for the past 3 weeks. And All the toys, dresses, puppypads, shampoo, brushes, combs, nail clippers, toothbrush, toothpaste, bed and kennel crate. Every book has different training advise, be sure to stick to just one, this way if you mess something up, there'll be a remedy. If you mix and match your training technique from different books, you'll get yourself into a corner with no way out. The easiest way is to make it easy for your puppy NOT to mess up. Your pup wants to please you. Be consistant in your training. Try ebay or amazon for used books. I bought 3 for less than 10 bucks last week. I also bought a Dog Fancy magazine at the same store I bought the dog food. (Pomeranians were the featured dog). I also bought a book from Waldons books, called "The everything Dog Book " I still have to finish reading it. amazon.com/ Everything-Dog-Book-Carlo-Devito/ dp/ 1580621449 . |
