Question: Electric pulse dog training collars any one used them?
(Posted by: simple solution on 2008-04-14 04:46:32)
I have a 3 year old dog up till now has been brilliant at commands, and still is except for one thing, when he spots another dog he takes off, a100 yards 1/ 2mile he is gone, good thing is he is not aggresive, a quick sniff and he is on his way back, ive went back to basics, treat praise no effect, a week with a dog trainer no effect, he has not been snipped, i dont want that just in case he gets lucky, he is cross collie and something long haired and fast, i dont want to have him on the lead all the time as the type of dog he is he needs plenty of exercise, and other dog walkers have the right to walk there dogs in peace, so anything on these collars would be helpfull 3years without a problem i suppose you could say the dog has not been trained propely every ones entitled to there opinion the opinion i want to hear, is from someone who has used one of the collars he gets at least 3hours a day exercise and when i spot a dog first he gets put on the lead, and it is in woods, he is never off the lead on road walks, lillylady, what gives me the right i pay me taxes ive never been a benefit scrounger and ive fought for this country i believe that entitles me to walk my dog in a safe place of the lead, so you speak to dogs do you ive pulled the dogs paper work out and the breed name is patagoian sheepdog, not mutt widow pu dont worry about other dogs being aggressive the two staffies look after him, i carnt consider castration they dont even do that to peadaphiles. |

I have used Electric collars for over 20 years with great results. In your case, just like in everyone else's who decides to use one, your dog would need to be conditioned to it, yu cannot just put one on and expect majic... You should get one on one instruction on the use of it as I believe that it would benefit you and your dog greatly. Good luck!! |

Treats DON'T WORK this type of collar works well when used WITH obedience training. obviously your dog has not been trained properly on a leash and the collar itself is not magic. without first understanding what you are doing wrong now the odds are the collar won't help you. a favorite quote of mine from an accomplished dog trainer; "an electric collar in the hands of a novice is like a straight-edge razor in the hands of a monkey " |

Your dog is very far from "brilliant ". I also find your reason for keeping him intacts disturbing. Do NOT get the collar. |

He shouldn't be off leash when walking only at an off leash dog park....a week with a trainer won't do the trick...collies are working dogs that need alot of exercise over 2hrs daily I recommend ....this can be throughout the day with a good long run or fast walk....try going out in the woods they love the smells of nature....as for greeting other dogs you should always hold him firmly on lead and say either wait or something you decide on..then ask the other owner if it is ok and tell them your dog is friendly...sniffing is their way to greet another as well as a DNA check..... |

You're telling me that not only is your dog not fixed, you don't keep him on a leash?? What, may I ask you, gives you the right to let your mutt (yes, he's a mutt if he's a cross) reproduce? Just in case he "gets lucky "? He SHOULDN'T get lucky, do you have any idea how many homeless animals there are today? You have no right to add to that just because you want your dog to "get lucky ". Trust me, your dog is NOT going to know the difference. Male dogs do not have the cognitive reasoning to be able to sit and think "man, I wish I'd get laid tonight " like humans. Get him fixed - it will make all the difference in the world as to your training problem. |

Yes, have used them and just like any other form of training you MUST be consistant with the correction. IMO this dog needs to be neutered ....you'll be amazed at the difference it makes.... |

A friend of mine has one of thoes for her german shepard, it worked in the begining but now hes back to his old tricks, its ok for a while but i say once they get the hand of wat ur asking them TAKE IT OFF cos at the end of the day they will become IMMUNEto them and wont listen to u further and the other answers are right 3 quarters of ur problem is because hes not done. u say people have a right to walk there dogs in peace, what happens if he runs up to a bitch who happens to be in heat if u cant stop him now HE WILL MATE, if he runs even just to sniff if shes in season some poor dog owner is going to have some lond haired fast thing attached to there dog. IF THAT WAS ME I WOULD NOT BE IMPRESSED best bet get him done it WILL end all ur problems after a bit of work. |

There are much better ways to train dogs than shocking them...you'd hardly shock a child for taking a cookie would you? You could try collars that emit a noise only audible to dogs that is completely harmless. |

Firstly getting him snipped with help, he doesnt need to get lucky - are you prepared for the responsibilty of puppies? He should be done anyway for health reasons. I would not use one of these collars on any dog (a few humans maybe). I would be going back to basics again using a lunge line and harness, back to using either treats or squeaky toy - whatever does it for your dog. Oh and if he's a collie crosed with something fast - ie greyhound or other sighthound - he is a lurcher - not known for great recall. Good luck and please use humane methods. |

I've never used them personally, but my neighbor has one for her 3 dogs and she swears by it. Before she got it her dogs would dig holes under the fence and get out all the time, but they have not escaped once since she installed the invisible fence. You should definatley get him "snipped " though, it's healthier and it will stop his need to roam. Dogs don't view mating as "getting lucky " like we do, they only breed to procreate, and there's PLENTY of mixed breed unwanted puppies out there, do we really need anymore? |

Please if this is the type of collar that gives an electric shock to the dog, don't use...there are less barbaric methods than these collars....why not try a collar that gives a blast of air into the face of the dog, just startles the animal rather than inflicting pain. Please reconsider castration, if your dog smells a bitch on heat he will be off and no amount of training, electric shocks or anything else will stop him...you mention he is not aggressive, what happens if he approaches an dog that IS aggressive. |

I recommend you visit the website I went to when my dog had behavioral issues a while back. It transformed my dog's behavior. Good Luck! |
