Question: Can tricolour dogs (specifically border collies) be created this way?

Someone (unreliable source) was telling me he bred his reddish tan border collie to a regular old black and white border collie, and most of the puppies were tricolour. He said the black and tan mixed... I think either both or one of his dogs carried the tricolour gene... Is what he said even possible?

If one of the grandparents was a tri that's where it's from. That's like saying if a black dog and a white dog had pups the puppies would be grey! lol

It's not as simple as that. As an example, if a Pit Bull (APBT) and a Greater Swiss Mountain dog breed, they won't necessarily be all tri-colors because the GSMD is. OR If you mix a black and white Pit Bull w/ a Rottie, doesn't mean all the puppies will be black and tan. it's a toss up, there's no real way to know. Even breeding two Black Labs can create Chocolate/ Yellow.
