Can you please define protection, because to two different people it can mean two completely different things. For example, if I was to describe my border collie as protective it would be in the sense that she is very loyal to me. Other dogs may be protective in that they bark, growl or whatever whenever their owner is at risk of harm. Other dogs may be protective in that they bark or growl to "protect " their owner or their owner's belonging (house, land, couch) from anyone else in close proximity. This last one is really dangerous as it can produce an agressive dog who is protective of everything and very unsocialiable. Plus "protectiveness " comes down to the temperment of the dog, not necessarily always the breed. I've seen agressive border collies and I've seen loving, playful border collies. And the same with german shepherds. Just do your research into the breed. Since it will be a mutt it will be unpredictable as you will never know how much of each breed will come out in the specific dog. I would strongly urge you to stay away from pet stores and random ads in the paper - look into Back Yard Breeding and the overpopulation for justification. Mutts are best found at pounds and purebreds are best found from breeders or pounds. |

German shepherd are, but even so, they need to be trained to be guard/ protective dogs or else they can hurt anyone that doesn't mean any harm. I don't think Border Collies make good protective dogs, most i have met were extremely playful and friendly. |

If life worked that way, it'd be easier huh? 1: You CAN'T get the best of both worlds. That's how the Labradoodle mongrel thing FAILED miserably. 2: If you like both breeds, get two SEPARATE ones (NOT at the same time, a couple years apart), or ADOPT one from a shelter (don't buy mutts from BYB) BUT mutts are unpredictable in everything. Dogs aren't here for protection, you should be protecting it. want protection, get a weapon and an alarm, they are FAR more help in protecting than A dog. |

I personally think it depends on the dog itself. many dogs are protective of their owners know matter the breed. my Bichon Frise is extremely protective and will attack anyone who comes in the house. while my akita will great people with kisses. |

Yes if you train them that way and make sure they know they can put all there trust in you. I have a small 7 year old Jack Rusell Terrier that is protective over everyone in the house even if i hit my brother she'll bite me. it all depends, we didn't train her it was just an instinct for her! Good luck !!! |
